Farming system

Our system is a low input style system where the main focus is grass & forage. The type of land we farm and the facilities we have at our disposal steered us towards this system and it has developed over time. All of our cows & in calf heifers winter outside as well as calve outside. They are wintered on forage crops such as Kale or on deferred grass. We also outwinter our weaned breeding heifer calves on the same system - resilience is built into our breeding herd from an early age.

Being a low input system and almost all grass, we have almost cut out all chemical use & fertiliser. Instead we focus on using legumes such as red & white clover to power our forage production. We also utilise herbal leys containing the likes of plantain and chicory to add diversity to the sward. Couple this with our rotational grazing system & stock that are bred to thrive in it, we believe we are heading in the right direction. There is still much to learn and we are constantly trying to tweak and improve each year.
